Distinguished Professor Amir H. Gandomi Receives the Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award

Distinguished Professor Amir H. Gandomi of our university has been honored with the 2025 Young Investigator Award from Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society.

The prestigious Sigma Xi society annually recognizes outstanding contributions to scientific and technical research and communication. Prof. Gandomi, who holds a professorship at the Data Science Institute of the University of Technology Sydney, received this award for his pioneering and impactful research that advances “AI for the social good,” applying data-driven solutions in public health, sustainability, and smart cities to enhance safety, resilience, and well‑being.



Amir H. Gandomi serves as Distinguished Professor at Obuda University, in addition to his role at the University of Technology Sydney. Before joining UTS, he was an Assistant Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology and a distinguished researcher at the BEACON NSF Center at Michigan State University. Professor Gandomi has authored more than 400 peer‑reviewed journal articles and 15 books, and has amassed over 68,000 citations (h‑index > 110). His publications have earned several best‑paper awards, including Elsevier‑IFAC Best Theory Paper in Engineering Applications of AI between 2020 and 2022. The Web of Science has listed him among Highly Cited Researchers six times, and Elsevier–Stanford rankings in 2023 placed him 24th worldwide in the “AI and Image Processing” subfield. Based on the Discipline‑/D‑Index, he is currently ranked as the 4th leading computer scientist in Australia.

He has received numerous honors for his work, including the 2025 Frederick Palmer Prize (ICE, UK), the 2024 IEEE TCSC Award for Excellence in Scalable Computing (MC), the 2023 Achenbach Medal (Stanford University), the 2022 Walter L. Huber Award—the highest mid‑career research honor in civil engineering—and the 2021 Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) from the Australian Research Council.

A pioneer in “AI for good” applications across healthcare, water and environmental management, and agriculture, Prof. Gandomi serves as associate editor for leading IEEE journals and regularly reviews for major scientific foundations. He is a frequent keynote and invited speaker worldwide, and a strong advocate for responsible and impactful artificial intelligence research.
